How to play games under Linux

I really REALLY want to just use gnu/Linux, but I play video games, and dual booting is a hassle, so what is the solution? Is it easy to set up a gaming VM? How's performance? That's pretty important.

Install windows 7 or botnet edition debotnetted as much as possible.
Install Virtualbox
Put distro on virtualbox
This makes sense because you do your heavy graphics shit on windows and your cool unix shit in the VM
Or you can go the other way and configure GPU passthrough, but you need specific hardware and it's a bit of a pain.

@Evil_kitten
How do I know if I am capable of GPU pass through?

If you have to ask, you're probably not

For intel you need VT-D supporting CPU and MOBO, for AMD I think AMD-Vi/IOMMU and a motherboard for it, too.

VGA passthrough is the way to go.

3 options:

Dual booting

Wine

Emulation/GPU passtgrough

Wine shouldn't be too difficult to set up, but I don't think it covers most modern games.

You already said you don't want to dual boot.

Emulating Windows and passing your GPU through may be beyond your means. It's pretty complicated. Look it up, if you think you can do it.

Nvidia cards are especially difficult to get working. That may even require soldering your card.

You'll need another card.

I'm in the AMD camp, but didn't someone come up with a patch in software to fix that?

VGA Passthrough
Native Linux version
Wine
DOSBox, if applicable
Virtualization, for older games

Start at the top, work your way down. Most vidya should be playable.
Alternatively if you don't have a gaming PC and just want some vidya grab an Xbox, Wii or PSP and hack it. They've got great games and are easy as fuck to set up.

Run mint
Use proprietary drivers
Use linux versions of games

And done.

Absolute trash. Running a cayman card and the FOSS drivers are better than the proprietary trash.

Personally I just got an old shitty computer when a local office went out of business for about $20. I run linux on that and just ssh into it and do all my neat shit.

I recall that video only having 80k something views at the beginning of this year. Around 50k when I first saw it.

Some of the PC gaming community is actually waking up thanks to Windows 10 & 8 being so terrible. The allure of playing PC games on a fresh windows install customized only for gaming every single time it's run must be irresistible.

Not that complicated now. Skylake and Z170 supports vt-d by default in most if not all products. Try to get an AsRock mobo for good measure, although some gigabyte and other brands are also supposed to work. Also get at least one AMD GPU for the Guest OS (windows in this case).

Can't argue with that, mid 00s is as recent games I'm willing to play. Older games are more likely to be libre.

It shouldn't take you that much time to back-up anything, provided you actually have a non-shit set-up and don't bloat your system down for no reason.
