Well, BM has two main influences. One being Venom with their Thrash Metal and Bathory coming more from a NWOBHM direction.

But it quickly degenerated into this raw, chaotic powerful music. Early Mayhem are a good example. It took a while until the second wave of BM Bands added more feature to the music and it became more "digestable".

But i really wouldnt say its anywhere close to Punk. Its more complex and the music itself had no political message in the beginning.

@Deadlyinx
Fenriz changed the music of Darkthrone from Raw Black Metal to Black 'n Roll so i understand why he thinks that in terms of music. I mentioned Venom earlier and them being Thrash Metal. Thrash Metal is inspired by Punk so i dont disagree completely. But one significant characteristic of Punk is that it has a political message and Black Metal lacked that completely in the beginning. Sure, texts were made about WW2 and other atrocities but only with a focus on the misanthropy.

I'm not what you could call being familiar with Punk. I listened to a couple of Ramones songs and thats about the closest i ever got to that kind of music.

So i have a hard time thinking of a Burzum, Mayhem, Mysticum or Darkthrone song that has riffs in it which sound even remotely like they are Punk.

Yeah, just look at shit like Misfits (Earth AD) or stuff like early Bathory which utilized similar "slide" riffs if you know what I mean. Going from a high pitch and sliding to a low pitch to create an evil sound. Metallica also used riffs inspired by early bunk mixed with NWOBHM. NWOBHM as you know was inspired by punk and old 70's rock.

Also, a lot of oldschool Swedish bands used influences from crust punk bands like Discharge.

I think you're mixing your genres up. Punk inspired a lot of metal genres but i don't think BM is one of them. Or well, not obviously. All the Bands having an influence on BM already weren't purely Punk anymore. Misfits is a Punk band, Bathory was Thrash and then turned into early Viking Metal, Metallica were THrash and turned into Speed Metal, Discharge a lot of swedish bands, yes, but most of them were Death Metal, Dismember f.e.

I think, this may also appear like Punk is a major influence since crust punk bands took BM influences and mixed their genres up. f.e. Amebix

Punk inspired BM more than any other metal genre. Sure, the structure doesn't match, but the riffs sure do. Also, BM uses melodies and a very different structure which may complicate things, but it is still very similar.

I'm sorry, but i just don't agree.

King_Martha
King_Martha

@Fried_Sushi
I see BM as another sub-genre of Metal that came into existence because bands wanted to be more and more extreme, causing a trend that in the end caused Black Metal.

And i think you see it like Fenriz, as a metal genre that was already very raw, very unstructured and it reminded you of Punk influences you also recognized in the music of bands that came before what people refer to as the Second Wave of Black Metal.

Thats fine.

We just have different approaches to assess the music but come to the same conclusion. Its a raw, chaotic and experimental music genre.

don't get me wrong man, i'm not saying it isn't metal.

metal culture

What do you mean by metal culture? If you aren't a metalhead and haven't experienced it, I bet you don't even know what it's like.

Here, I'll give you an example:

be me
go to a metal concert
a bunch of dudes there
have a fun time and watch a band play music

I never experience anything edgy while doing this. Sure, there are edgy teenfags creating a moshpit but that has nothing to do with me.

Ofcourse you don't, you can't understand them anyways.

The lyrics are spoken in a matter-of-fact fashion. They aren't even meant to be taken seriously. They aren't written to speak to the voice of a random teenager like pop music, they are just expressed to explain life.

yes, what else?
Slipknot is not metal.

But in general, there are clear associations that can be made. And for metal culture it's edgy shit.

death theme everywhere (skulls, satan, grim reaper)
even the fucking names of metalbands are as edgy as possible: Slayer, megadeth, Antrhax, Disturbed, just the first to pop into my head (inb4 you re-categorize them as some bullshit sub-genre). Not to mention tryhard names like 'Anal Vomit' and the likes
live shows involve as much edgy shit as possible: eating live animals, blood on stage, acts like Rockbitch, Dildo masks, etc etc, are typical for metal and it's subgenres
artwork is dominated again by death themes, snakes, fire, beasts, monsters, etc
even the fonts used in metal bandname logo's, artwork, tshirts etc are often literally as edgy as possible

Your counterarguments are ridiculously useless.
if you don't consider a name like 'slayer' to be edgy, then debating about whether or not metal is edgy is useless. We should be debating on what 'edgy' means then.

Slayer is a badass name, that's why they chose it.

In a lot of ways black metal is reactionary to what is/was going on: culturally, musically (religiously if it's satanic). It's what was going on in the heads of the people that started making the music, it simply is what it is. A lot of the cliches that we see today are simply tongue-in-cheek or a semi-serious interpretation of what was: like satanic lyrics, overdone black metal clothes and aesthetics.

But it's kind of the same idea in spirit of the Satanic Temple, just giving people a show because it's what they expect. Playing along with it, not because it's inherently a part of the message.

I'm American though, so I could be misinterpreting how some people feel about it. The people that I've spoken to at shows (when a black metal band actually tours the US) usually feel that way, or at least the ones that aren't angsty teenagers do.
