Fort McMurray’s more than 80,000 residents have been ordered to flee the oilsands city after a massive wildfire, fuelled by soaring temperatures and tinder-dry forest, broached the city limits.

It is the largest wildfire evacuation in Alberta’s history.

At 6:20 p.m., a mandatory evacuation order was issued for the entire city, with residents advised to head north to Noralta Lodge and wait for further instructions. Word came down later that Noralta Lodge was full and evacuees were being sent further north to other work camps.

The wildfire burning in the city is expected to get worse Wednesday, when winds are forecast to switch direction and increase up to 50 km/h.

Temperatures reached 32 C in Fort McMurray and humidity dipped below 15 per cent Tuesday. Temperatures Wednesday are expected to hit 30 C.

At a Tuesday afternoon news conference, Premier Rachel Notley said that “this is bigger than Slave Lake.” The Slave Lake fire in 2011 decimated the town and forced the evacuation of 9,000 people.

Fort McMurray residents are wondering if they will have homes to return to, as the fire that started Sunday quickly overwhelmed firefighters and the city’s resources.

The first evacuation orders Tuesday came at 4:15 p.m., when the municipality ordered the evacuation of Abasand, Beacon Hill, Gregoire, Waterways, Draper, Saline Creek and Grayling Terrace. Residents were told to head to the Anzac Recreation Centre, about a one-hour drive south of Fort McMurray.

As they headed south, those people saw much of their city on fire. The immolation of the Centennial Trailer Park was nearly complete, with the flames stripping all that was flammable off the metal skeletons of mobile homes and vehicles.

Trees 20 metres from Highway 63 were burning, with thick smoke covering the highway. The McMurray Métis office was in flames and looked ready to collapse under the heat.

It was impossible to see into Waterways, which was hidden in yellow and orange smoke, but trees and buildings were burning.
[…]
On Tuesday morning, 80 firefighters and eight helicopters were fighting the blaze. A heavy helicopter was expected to arrive in the region around 3 p.m.

A cause of the wildfire had not been determined Tuesday.

inb4 Trudeau pays lip service then pays for more rapefugees instead of helping out.

Wish this were in 'Murrica so I could sell the residents water bottles for $1/piece.

Unfortunately it's in Canada.

Take note, Canadabros: Now is the chance to make a good buck off of necessities.

Getting those water bottles in the first place costs more than a dollar. Plus charging the recently homeless who belong here for water bottles when faggots are collecting "free" money for Syrians seems kind of dirty.

That's also a valid point. They may not be dindus, but that's still about 80k people who just lost their homes & jobs, and have families to look after. It's also Alberta and up north to boot, which means a good portion of them will be armed.

Water is dirt cheap here in the states. Can get a 24 pack for $3.

A bottle is 70 cents and up here from what I've experienced, not including recycling deposit, which you pay up front. Though you can get 4 for a dollar (plus deposits) at Dollarama.

It's funny cause I agree with all 3 of those points in general, but they don't really relate to FortMac situation atm.

For anyone else still wondering: Afaik Canada only takes in 25k refugees (unless that changed? idk), and that's them for the whole country, Alberta is getting somewhere 2.5k-3k last I remember, and that's over several cities. FortMac evacuees are not gonna be sheltered in places that are super far away from them like, idk, Red Deer or Lethbridge of Calgary. So FortMac ppl are not exactly competing with 25k Syrians. Also I've heard Syrians complaining, at least in my city, of having to pay 6months rent upfront when renting, so they're probably not getting as much social assistance as they might in Germany or something.
And if anything they're gonna be provided with housing made for longer-term renting. Shelters for disasters/crises etc. is different. When this city flooded back in 13, it's not like anyone affected got free rooms from landlords at proper apartment developments. It was mostly accomodations at public places like high schools etc.

I don't think refugees should be here tbh but either way FortMacs and Syrians are not competing in this situation, it's apples and oranges.

I'm one of those lucky fuckers who's been driving all night to Edmonton. We're pretty sure our house got broken in to last night, and might catch fire today.
Definitely no space in the work camps, they were overfilled for the shutdowns at the oil sites.
When one of our gas stations exploded, one of the others jacked up their prices to $1.90, disaster sure brings out the best in people.

The counter is controlled fires, but people generally fear fire in all it's forms so it makes the place that's evolved around burning to ground occasionally to make itself suitable for an even bigger and uncontrollable fire.

It's hard to control fires when your new bolshevik leader pulls $15,000,000 from the forest fire fighting budget.

15 mil is a fucking lot of mitigation bro. Fighting fire when it exists is expensive as fuck, fighting fire before it starts is much much cheaper.

To anyone in the area, is Alberta experiencing the Pine Beetle infestation or has it not worked its way that far north yet? I know the southern parts of Canada are loosing a fuck load of forest to the little shits.
